Tips for Potty Training a Puppy
You may have recently adopted or are otherwise caring for a puppy.
While these little balls of fur are undoubtedly adorable, it can be difficult to manage them if they’re untrained.
One of the biggest obstacles is preventing them from having accidents indoors. Here are some tips to make the process go as smoothly as possible.
Take them out as early as possible
Pups will need to pee as soon as they wake up. You’re going to want to catch them bright and early and take them out. Don’t return home until the puppy has done its business outside.
The more walks the better! Every two hours is recommended.
Feed Them at Routine Hours
Make sure you’re putting out the dog chow at around the same time every day. Shortly after your puppy has eaten it will need to use the bathroom again. This will allow your dog to get used to a routine of going out when they gotta go.
Be careful not to feed your pup too late to avoid midnight accidents.
Reward your pup with a treat the minute they’ve done their business outside. Don’t wait until you’re back home, your dog might not make the connection between going outside and the reward if too much time has passed.
Of course, with all these tips comes the golden rule; patience! It’s going to take a bit of time for your puppy to be fully potty trained, but once they’ve got it they should be set for life.
